I forgot how crazy the festivities get around this part of the world. Normally I get in just in time to join in to toss the yu sheng or dip my chopsticks into the bubbling pot of steamboat goodness.

5 years shouldn't feel so long but for me it's a fifth of my life at present and boy have I lost touch of reality. I was bolstered in my warped bubble so much so that I no longer feel like I belong. Not one spot on this earth can I fully identify with.

Is there a word for that?

Josh says that's wanderlust but I'm not seeking adventure. I am quite happy feeling displaced.

why hello there Mr Tarte Tatin. how your lovely golden hue and slightly burnt caramel flavours entice my senses, while the aroma of baked apples completely disarms even the most seasoned connoisseurs.
I'd like to thank GourmetTraveller magazine(for the wealth of knowledge plus the step by step photo collage recipe), my sister Yusra(for determining the cause of error thus enabling me to correct my mistake and successfully churn out my very own from-scratch vanilla creme anglaise). Lastly i'd like to thank the person sitting behind the desk, who was responsible for not activating my standby duty today. thank you, merci, arigato, terima kasih, danke.

note to self: if ever a recipe calls for "stir continuously" -and/if recipe meddles with cream and eggs- remember to stirstirstir-likeyourbloodylifedependedonit. unless of course you wanna end up with a separation of bits and pieces of scrambled eggs swimming in a yellowish liquid.

I wasted:

-100gms sugar
-1 vanilla pod
-200ml pouring cream

-effort

kudos to my brainiac 2nd sister, besides the numerous textbooks of facts that she devours whole she manages to squeeze the many(retarded) names of boys I use to go-out-with slash give-names-to.
i.e nick captain of my heart wee, the cute bald dewd with the lagi cute brother(quite a mouthful huh)
She even remembers details like the name of the cat of the dewd I used to stalk.
let's just say that a memory like hers would come in handy when it comes to blackmailing an older sibling into lending her clothes and shoes. But my amazing sister here(who is an angel by the way) is nothing like that. In fact she's nothing short of perfect.

And she's not, for the record, making me write/type out this entry as a hommage to her.

i finally broke my dry spell tonight.
with my trusty spatula, i whipped up lychee flavoured macarons.

here's a small update,

the salty caramel aka caramel fleur de sel is absolutely delicious! Lip-smacking!

After sitting in the fridge for a couple of hours it's taken on the caramel consistency that we all know and love.
so good..
Dipped my french loaf into it a moment ago, a pre-bed-stuff-face-with-food routine.

macaron-making is a breeze next to this epic fail. and let's not start with the sheer cost of fleur de sel(10 bucks for 5 ounces), thankfully lazy bones didn't feel up to the journey to seah st so i used ordinary sea salt instead.

i managed to kill my mom's spatula, it melted while i was stirring the sugar into an even caramel. had to start over cuz bits of spatula was swimming around my caramel, and last i checked plastic isn't ingest able.

and why didn't nobody mention that using an immersion blender is like a sprinkler on a lawn??! my caramel splattered over every inch of surface in my kitchen. even my face wasn't spared.
gave up after the 3rd mopping, the floor remains resolutely sticky.

it was nothing short of a disaster.

Lesson am i taking from today's destruction:

New found respect for caramel makers.

armin's playing tonight at zouk while i'm at home baking.
pistachio this time, it's mom's favourite flavour. got quite alot of pistachio buttercream leftover so the plan for tmr(courtesy of my sister Yusra) is to slather it over plain muffins.
Success at last!!
it was a big mess the first time i tried making buttercream. from an undomestic goddess who screwed up instant mango pudding(from muji) to a spatula wielding macarooner WHEE!!
so far i've conquered lemon, rose and chocolate macarons. latest one to add to that list is pistachio.
friends are welcomed to join me in my quest to take over the world one macaron flavour at a time. my only requirement is that you have to be willing to help with the washing up after.

been spending a bulk of my time at home with bunny.
i let him run around in my room. poor Toastie is so big now but i can't find a cage bigger than the one i currently have so i let him out for as long as possible. He's grown so much in a span of 3 months, i do hope he stops growing soon.
He's adorable though! spend many good hours watching him binky around the room.
anyone know a good groomer that does housecalls cuz Toastie got majorly stressed out last time i brought him to the groomers? even pooped weird after. yikes!

this here is a cocotte. according to the french that is. basically it's a dutch oven; a thick-walled cooking pot. Or a more common term for it is casserole. but it sounds terribly dull in british english(casserole).
they're my star buy at the mall yesterday. there was a sale and these babies went for €1 each.

And thanks to the fact that it's well into winter i won't have problems packing 'em into my suitcase.(read: winter clothes - scarve, coat, knit, knit option2, knit dress, furry hat)
paddings galore.

this was taken last week while walking along bleeker street.
we were lucky that day, weather held up and it stayed a balmy 12 degrees so a simple cardi sufficed. That guy claimed to be a fashion blogger from paris and wanted a photo for his blog. it validated the extra 10mins spent on eye make-up. i was so exhausted though, 8 hour flight from frankfurt + battling the jet-lag.
wanting to put my feet up versus wasting precious minutes in the mother of all cities in the world: New York.
i'm sure some would beg to differ but it's my personal favourite and i would give an arm and a leg to be there over the holidays with josh of course. doesn't seem to be working out as i hoped though.
fingers still crossed...

celebrations are in order. i've finally made it past the 100th entry. 2 years 6 months and (what's 24 - 8)16 days, 102 entries as of today.
either i'm losing that grey matter that resides in the frontal cortex also known as the medulla oblongata. dissipating into thin air replaced by the likes of "i'm sorry, sir", "thank you, madam", "do enjoy your meal", "please fasten your seatbelts"

this is not a classic case of jetlag.
no sire, this my friend is my body telling me that it's had enough.
no more subjecting it to gmt: +2, -7 and +8, all within a week.
no more freezing below zero temperatures and back to sunny 34degree singapore in a span of 3 days.

i wasted a whole day in LA(albeit perfect weather and former plans to drive to Universal Studios) cuz the skin around my eyes were acting up causing it to be sore and made me have an 'ugly-stay-indoors' day.

i really like Whole Foods. besides being organic and pro-green, they present me with various choices of healthy shit, yummy healthy shit at it!
like yesterday i had mum's homemade soup -which is basically a clear chicken(free range of course) carrots, celery and onion all thrown in- and a slab of sesame covered seared tuna fillet.
it's heavenly laa! imagine this: hunk of tuna, sesame seeds, nigella seeds and wasabi covering the sides, seared lightly so the centre's still pink and raw, cut a slab about an inch thick horizontally and you've got yourself the garden of eden. throw in a mix of rocket and red chard and squeeze a wedge of lemon. ta-da!
it made me feel so fucking organic.
their breads....don't get me started on their freshly made daily breads. sourdough, kalamata olives, four cheeses, fruit and nut, whole grained, ciabata, foccasia, the works! the aroma alone can kill.
for dinner i had 2 tofu spring rolls(the vietnamese sort rolled with rice paper) half expecting it to taste like my copy of the thelondonpaper but it was just bursting with freshness. like freshly cut grass. i loved it!! loved it!
please don't take my word for it. go see for yourself how Whole Foods can influence a completely new and healthy lifestyle for you. gawd i sound like an ad!?
i suppose the only downside is the disposable wooden(very environmentally friendly la) forks and spoons. they're cute to boot but it tinged my vanilla panna cotta with a little wooden flavour. so i ended up eating my dessert with my nose pinched.

i'm nesting.

it started with a space invaders ice cube tray, then it seemed like a good idea to have lavender scenting our place so in came aromatherapy oils and scented wood.
more recently josh and i acquired a set of fridge magnets by JLed fr the comic and toy convention.
the latest splurge spurred on by Trisha, saw me getting my paws on a queen-sized goose and down duvet complete with drumrollls duvet/pillow covers and fitted bedsheets.

this is me B.C. acquiring my own place. Be worried. Be very very worried.

i deleted the previous post.
a couple of days ago i went to Joanne's to get my hair washed and blown for ayu's wedding dinner, that's when it hit me.
back in 2007, for the better part of it, spurred on by my then newly acquired overwhelm of finances -this was after Alan and before Joanne- i decided that my magnificent mane deserved only the best, Toni & Guy best. 460 buckaroos worth of best. ouch right..
so anyhoos here's the thing, i don't remember being head over heels infatuated with my wash girl/boy, in fact i can't even remember the hairwash itself. it wasn't bad or anything, just very forgettable.
so this completely bazookas the first post on how i fall hopelessly and utterly in love with my washboy/girl/dyke.

obviously yours truly isn't taken seriously after a beer. after a beer and 2 lychee martinis and some green label, they practically ignored my slurring.
just to get me through my dreary day, i've poured some green label into my water bottle for class tomorrow. hur hur..
